SCARS Editorial: Open Letter To SCARS Members & Victims

As you all know, SCARS – the Society of Citizens Against Relationship Scams is a nonprofit corporation that is focused on crime victims assistance. We are registered with governments around the world.

Like any business – nonprofit or for-profit – there is an organizational structure and the need for coordination. That means we have discipline in the delivery of our services and our commitment to our mission.

Like all real organizations, SCARS has a hierarchy with its Board of Directors overseeing everything, with our Officers executing the direction of our Board. We also have a Board of Advisors to offer their suggestions and advice but have no organizational responsibility. Under our Officers, we have our employees, contractors, and volunteers.

Just Like All Real Nonprofit Entities, Our Mission Comes First!

No organization can survive by letting rogue personnel or volunteers do or say anything they want. Personal opinions have their place, but the direction is guided by the Chief Executive. It does not matter if it is NGOs like the International Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Salvation Army, or SCARS.

We recently terminated several volunteers over their rogue behaviors and comments that were intended to disrupt and aggrandize themselves. In addition, we declined offers from others who wanted to become volunteers. We regret this action was necessary, but the final word in any organization is its senior leadership, and this is what keeps an organization such as SCARS continuing to offer the highest quality and most professional services free of cost to crime victims worldwide.

We have established the highest standards for ethical behavior in supporting scam victims. Many times people let their emotions get out of control, and we have to arrest this by terminating individuals when we determine their conduct is not consistent with our mission and standards.

We will never apologize for the removal of individuals that believe their opinions matter more than caring for scam victims. Our mission is more important than an individual, it is about helping as many victims as we can, and we do that consistently with real international standards.

If you are someone who receives support from SCARS we wanted you to know that we do our best for every victim. We can’t help everyone, but we will always try.

Whether you seek our assistance or not, we encourage you to get help from real professionals, not a made-up group run from a kitchen! Speak with a local mental health professional if you need it and do not let a pretender tell you that scams are not a serious traumatic event in your life.

We thank our employees, volunteers, officers, and board members, for their continuing sacrifice to help scam victims.

Sincerely,

SCARS the Society of Citizens Against Relationship Scams Incorporated

Tim McGuinness, Ph.D.
Chief Executive, Chairman, and Founder

FAQ: How Do You Properly Report Scammers?

It is essential that law enforcement knows about scams & scammers, even though there is nothing (in most cases) that they can do.

Always report scams involving money lost or where you received money to:

  1. Local Police – ask them to take an “informational” police report – say you need it for your insurance
  2. Your National Police or FBI (www.IC3.gov »)
  3. The SCARS|CDN™ Cybercriminal Data Network – Worldwide Reporting Network on www.Anyscam.com »

This helps your government understand the problem, and allows law enforcement to add scammers on watch lists worldwide.
