The SCARS™ Communication Philosophy Is Very Simple! It’s Radical Candor!

The Society of Citizens Against Relationship Scams [SCARS] exists in a world of very hard truth

Every day we deliver horrible news to people on the worst day of their lives. We do our best to help them, and especially those that are right on the edge and ready to jump – figuratively and literally!

Our organization and our team follow a simple philosophy called Radical Candor.

Radical Candor is Caring Personally while Challenging Directly. According to its creator, it’s “guidance that’s kind and clear, specific and sincere.”

Your entire working life you’ve been told to be professional. Too often, that’s code for leaving your humanity at home. To build strong care services you have to Care Personally.

Since you learned to talk you’ve likely been told some version of, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Then you become the boss and the very thing you’ve been taught not to do since you were 18 months old is suddenly your job. The same goes for crime victims’ service providers.

In order to succeed, you have to Challenge Directly. Challenging people is often the best way to show you care. It does not mean that whatever you think is the truth (though we are experts in what we do); it means you share your (humble) opinions directly. Not hate, not aggression, not rebellion, but opinions. As a world leader in crybercrime we have many of those!

We follow a guide that is actually published and available for all.

Because Radical Candor can be hard to put into practice, they developed a simple framework that anyone can keep at the top of their mind in the heat of the moment.

Understanding what is not Radical Candor can help you better understand what is. These behaviors that everyone falls into at one time or another are not personality types just behaviors. Remember that these phrases are not labels. Please don’t write people’s names in these boxes; use the framework as a compass to guide your conversations to a more productive place. They can also profoundly help scam victims in their communications between victims and with their friends and families.

Below we will provide links to allow you to learn more about this important approach to communications.

  • Obnoxious Aggression, also called brutal honesty or front-stabbing, is what happens when you challenge someone directly, but don’t show you care about them personally. It’s praise that doesn’t feel sincere or criticism that isn’t delivered kindly.
  • Ruinous Empathy is what happens when you want to spare someone’s short-term feelings, so you don’t tell them something they need to know. You Care Personally, but fail to Challenge Directly. It’s praise that isn’t specific enough to help the person understand what was good or criticism that is sugar-coated and unclear. Or simply silence. Ruinous Empathy may feel nice or safe, but is ultimately unhelpful and even damaging.
  • Manipulative Insincerity — backstabbing, political or passive-aggressive behavior — is what happens when you neither Care Personally nor Challenge Directly. It’s praise that is insincere, flattery to a person’s face and harsh criticism behind their back. Often it’s a self-protective reaction to Obnoxious Aggression.

We are finding that their approach works best for the victims that are sincere in finding recovery but not for those that prefer to feed their rage or anger. This is the same basic approach that our management team has used for decades with success.

We thought we would share this with you to help you better understand our commitment to professionalism, and to helping scam victims recover.

FAQ: How Do You Properly Report Scammers?

It is essential that law enforcement knows about scams & scammers, even though there is nothing (in most cases) that they can do.

Always report scams involving money lost or where you received money to:

  1. Local Police – ask them to take an “informational” police report – say you need it for your insurance
  2. Your National Police or FBI (www.IC3.gov »)
  3. The SCARS|CDN™ Cybercriminal Data Network – Worldwide Reporting Network on www.Anyscam.com »

This helps your government understand the problem, and allows law enforcement to add scammers on watch lists worldwide.
