The Reality of Scamming in Nigeria: Understanding Cyber-Enabled Fraud

When most people picture a scammer, they picture a lone criminal at a keyboard, freely choosing to deceive strangers for money. That picture is not wrong, but it is far too simple, and its simplicity gets in the way of understanding what is actually happening in the world of online fraud. This course examines the reality of cyber-enabled fraud centered on Nigeria, drawing on the work of Dr. Suleman Lazarus, a sociologist and criminologist who has spent more than a decade studying online fraud in Africa south of the Sahara. His research, including his 2026 book and a series of peer-reviewed studies, offers one of the most careful and humane accounts available of how this fraud is produced, organized, and sustained. This course teaches his central concepts and findings so that advocates, nonprofit staff, and survivors can understand the offender side of these crimes with accuracy rather than caricature.

Understanding how fraud is organized does not excuse it, and nothing in this course asks you to feel sympathy for a criminal at the expense of the person they harmed. The victims of these scams suffer devastating and lasting damage, and that harm is real regardless of the circumstances of the person who caused it. But understanding the machinery of fraud makes advocates better at their work, makes prevention smarter, and replaces a vague, often prejudiced picture with an informed one. Knowledge of the offender side serves the victim side.
