Understanding the Biases in Academic & Industry Scam & Fraud Victim Studies
Too Many Scam/Fraud Studies Are Excessively Biased
There is a fundamental problem with almost all academic and industry studies about scams and fraud victimization because their samples are almost exclusively white!
People of color are being represented in most (that we have seen) academic or industry studies. This is a serious problem.
This is not (SCARS believes) a deliberate bias, but it is because surveying and research techniques need to be altered for other communities of victims.
Because of this, we should be skeptical of scam/fraud victimization studies that are over 95% white because the criminals are not just targeting white people! They are even more merciless with other races, such as when Chinese scammers target Chinese expats, or when African scammers go after African Americans or Europeans! And how they target LGBTIA+ communities!
For example, when we look at efforts in support, we find that almost all online support groups are nearly exclusively white. While SCARS support groups include all races, religions, genders, orientations, and cultures. When you design for inclusiveness from the beginning it becomes easier to achieve. But we have to recognize that victims of color have substantially less trust of law enforcement and willingness to come forward.
When we study these crimes and their impact on populations we need to be extra inclusive to better understand the full impact on victim populations.
SCARS is not so narrow in our analysis and services to victims. Our studies are based on mixed respondents from many races, genders, orientations, religions, and cultures. If you want better results talk to us, we can help you achieve more inclusive samples for better results!
